I’ve been seeing several articles on this Payday Loan Collection Scam. It is apparently pretty widespread and I would guess that my agency’s name and logo are not the only one being used by these crooks.

  22. I just found out that I have an electric bill that wasn’t paid 5 years ago. We were taken to court by a debt collector and recieved a judgement. Now we’re trying to get our power turned on in a new house. The electric company will not turn it on until we pay the past due amount. It’s my understanding that debt collectors purchase the debts from overdue bills. So who do I pay? Debt collector or electric company? Can they refuse to turn on our power?

    • admin says:

I would pay the electric company that you owe the money to at this point. That is more than likely the name to whom the Judgment is owed. However, I would get a copy of The Judgment first. If the Judgement is in the name of the collection agency, it is best to pay them. Just make sure whoever you pay gives a clear receipt and guarantees to clear the judgment off the State records, etc.
